Alpha brain waves are associated with a flow state of mind.

In his bestselling book “Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in A Distracted World,” author and professor Cal Newport explains that “most people have lost the ability to go deep – spending their days instead in a frantic blur of email and social media, not even realizing there is a better way.

That better way, of course, is to get into flow states more often so you can achieve deep work. And the key to diving into that deeper state is to harness your brain’s alpha waves.

EON ARTS: Although not yet scientifically validated, clinical data strongly suggests that the Flow Machine induces either a high theta wave state or a low alpha wave state (or both) in the viewer.

“Mental skill training is key to change and growth. And it all seems to start with relaxation; apparently it’s hard to be your best, and to do your best, when you’re anxious!”

A Review on the Role of the Neuroscience of Flow States in the Modern World

“Furthermore, there appears to be support in the literature for a particular neurocognitive activity pattern for flow induction in which expertise and flow studies appear to show a hemispheric shift away from the frontal left evidenced by a resulting reduction of left frontal activity and an increase in frontal alpha while facilitating a greater allocation of neuronal resources to the visual-spatial processes of the right brain, thus resulting in higher levels of performance.”

Theta waves
are one of five types of electrical pulses the brain produces. They are associated with intense creativity, visualization, imagination, and problem-solving. Some say that people who drive a lot on the freeway often get good ideas in theta states. Theta waves are strong during meditation, prayer, internal focus, and spiritual awareness. They also reflect the state between wakefulness and sleep and relate to the subconscious mind. Theta waves are normal during sleep, but abnormal in awake adults. They are also normal in children up to 13 years old.

The concept of the “Flow State” has even migrated its way into one of Disney’s films. Here is a short preview about the Flow State in the movie “Soul”.

Understanding Flow, the Path to Optimal Experience

Mindfulness involves being fully present and engaged in the current moment. This state of awareness is conducive to Flow. Practices like meditation, breathing exercises, or even simple mindful observation can train your brain to focus more effectively.
